Our content management systems

At Essentee we use two content management systems:

  • Joomla
  • Wordpress
  • We have develop non-cms/static html sites (typically micro sites)

What is a content management system?

A content management system (CMS) is a type of technology that manages content on a website. This includes text, images, video, data etc.CMS tools are now very popular as they allow people to manage the content of their website without having to understand the code behind it.

Good content management systems also separate the content from the 'look and feel' (ie the visual design) of the site. This helps to maintain consistency and quality of visuals, by limiting people's ability to add link colours and font styles of their own choice - a bad idea, even if they are some kind of designer!

About Joomla!

Joomla! is one of the most popular website software solutions. It is 'open source' which means it is freely available to everyone. This reduces the cost of licensing for site owners.Joomla! is very flexible. There is also a large community of developers who have developed extensions for Joomla! that enable all sorts of functionality. Many at no extra cost.

We use Joomla! for most of our sites because of this power, the size of the user community and because of the advantages for our clients.

We are planning to role out a series of Joomla! video tutorials.

The first one is due in early 2011 so watch this space! Subscribe to our email newsletter to stay tuned for further announcements.

If you are an Auckland based Joomla developer and interested in forming a local Joomla! user community we'd like to hear from you!

About Wordpress

Wordpress is a very popular system originally designed as a blogging platform but now used by many as a CMS.

According to Wordpress it is a 'state of the art publishing platform'. We use Wordpress for sites that are small or having blogging as their core content update activity.

Wordpress is a great piece of software, although it is not suitable for larger sites that have multiple sections that get frequently updated.
