Website Management - What websites link back to mine?

When it comes to the question of what websites link back to yours, it usually comes up in the context of search engine optimisation (SEO).

This is because backlinks (these links from other people's sites to yours) is one of the holy grails of SEO.  The more quality links you have from relevant sites, the better.  And it can be hard work.

But what if you've changed the name of your business, your phone number or moved offices?  How do you find out what websites your business is listed on, so you can check they have the right details?

Here's How:

Update:  Yahoo have announced they are shutting down Site Explorer.

An alternative is Open Site Explorer from SEOMoz  which will give you 1,000 links without registering.

1. Go to www.yahoo.co.nz (or your relevant country version)

2. Type in link:yoursite address as illustrated below:

yahoo

3. Click on web search or just hit enter

4. You will be redirected to Site Explorer and a list of links to your site will be displayed

5. From the drop down boxes at the top right of the results list you can see two options for showing links.

Set 'Show Inlinks' to "Except from this domain" and 'to': "Entire Site" by selecting these options from the drop down lists as illustrated:

yahoo2

6. So there you have a list of the domains that link to you.

You may not need to check all of these sites, as you should recognise at least some of them.

The one's most likely to have your business' information are directory and business network listings.
