Hide Facebook updates from your friends
Thursday, 20 January 2011 08:07
You can create Facebook lists to help you control who sees your updates - and more importantly who doesn't.
For example, say you have a few Facebook friends who are work colleagues.
Maybe you don't want them seeing how drunk you got at the weekend or how you hate your boss/job/the customers.
- Click on Account from on the top-right corner
- Click on Edit Friends.
- Click on Create a List and give it a name such as "Work"
- Pick the people who you don't want to share everything with and click Create List.
- When you write a status update, click the padlock next to Share and choose Customise.
- In the box under Hide this from, start typing the name of the list you just created, eg Work.
- If you want to always hide your updates from these people, click Make this my default setting.
If you want to edit these lists, click on Account, then Edit Friends.
The lists you have created are at the top left of the screen.
Use lists to control privacy
You can also use lists to control who sees what type of information about you such as religious beliefs
- Click on Account from on the top-right corner
- Click on Privacy Settings
- Click on Custom then customise settings
- From the list, identify the type of information you want to hide from certain people
- Click on the button next to it to show a drop down box and select Customise
- In the box under Hide this from, start typing the name of a list you have created that contain the people you don't want to see this information, eg Work.
- Click Save setting.
It doesn't look like there is an option to 'Only show people from this list' which would be a bit more useful, but perhaps it will come in the future.
Correction: There is an option to 'Only show People' from this list. You may want to use this so that only your family can see your Birthday or the places you can check in to.
- When you are in the box in step 6 above, select Specific People from the drop down box next to Specific People.
- In the box underneath, type in the name of a list you have created.
- Select it from the list
- Click Save Settings
