Link building can be a long hard road, but social network participation includes linking to content of interest - so use this behaviour to develop back links to your content.

Before you start, make sure your content is optimised
Then:
1. Find your audience - where they go and what they are interested in - and what they share.
2. Define your objectives. Objectives and measurements for social media are different to traditional marketing ones. Think about measures such as mentions, recommendations or the amount/depth of discussion.
3. Establish a game plan. Focus on content that encourages interaction by active promotion and easy sharing.
4. Create a tactical mix. Whatever your tactical mix it will be an investment - time, relationships and creation of content optimized for keywords.
5. Measure your goals.
